Houston's Northside encompasses Independence Heights and surrounding communities north of the Heights proper, just inside Beltway 8. Independence Heights was the first incorporated African American city in Texas, and the neighborhood maintains strong community identity and character. The area has seen revitalization investment with new housing development alongside established residential blocks.
Housing on the Northside includes older single-family homes, apartment complexes, and newer townhome developments that have arrived with the Heights' overflow growth. Apartments run $850–$1,600/mo, and rental homes $1,200–$2,000/mo. The area offers more space and lower rents than the adjacent Heights for those priced out of that market.
The Heights Hike and Bike Trail is accessible from parts of the neighborhood, connecting to the broader trail network. Downtown Houston is 15 minutes south, and Loop 610 and I-45 provide metro-wide connectivity. The area is being studied for future METRORail expansion.
